Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab Comic Book Themed Scents Review!

This post contains products that were sent to me for review consideration!

Hey True Believers!

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab was super kind and generous to provide me with some of their comic book themed perfume oils for review! I left it up to them what they wanted me to review, so they picked out these awesome scents! I’m a huge fan of BPAL not only because of how cool their company mythos is, but also their huge variety of scents (that smell AMAZING) and the fact that they last hours upon hours on me.  I usually dab a bit on each wrist,  behind both ears,  and in the center of my neck.  I can smell my scents all day/night long! A little goes a long way!

BPAL produces a huge variety of perfume oils in a large array of scents that is bound to appeal to everyone. They have general catalogue scents, limited edition scents, licensed scents, and lunar scents (which are released for purchase only on the full moon for about 72 hours) If you are wary of buying a full 5ml bottle of a scent, they also offer imp’s ears (Except for the limited and licensed collections.) They are all cruelty free and most are vegan except for the ones that are honey based.

Full size 5ml Bottles:

  • General Catalog:  $17.50
  • Limited Edition:  $23.00
  • Licensed: $26.00-$30.00

Imp’s Ears 1/32oz: $4.00 each or 6 for $22.00

About Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab
Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab specializes in formulating intriguing, compelling body and household blends with a dark, romantic, and sexual tone. Our scents run the aesthetic gamut of romance era, Renaissance, Medieval and Victorian formulas, pagan and mythological blends, and horror / Gothic-themed scents. By utilizing our knowledge of homeopathy and aromatherapy, the conceptual theories of hermetic alchemy, and the aesthetic artistry of perfumery, we have mastered the art of encapsulating allegorical ideas into singular olfactory experiences.

We participate in the Green Power for a Green LA program at work and in our homes, and have participated in fundraisers for many fine organizations, including the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, the Orangutan Foundation UK, AIDS Project Los Angeles, Covenant House, the Red Cross, and the Humane Society.

The following review is based on how it worked with my body’s chemistry. Because everyone has a different body chemistry, my opinion on how it smells may not be true for you.

Witchblade Collection: The Magdalena

$26.00 per 5ml bottle. Presented in an amber apothecary glass vial.

BPAL’s Description:  Frankincense, myrrh, leather, ti leaf, saint wood, benzoin, and labdanum absolute.

My Thoughts:  Definitely a musk category smell with a tiny bit of sweetness. It has the smell of incense which is probably the frankincense and myrrh coming through as the top notes. It does dry down to a clean, woody smell which is really nice. And after little it sit a little longer, it goes a little sweet. It smells like a wise, sexy, and mysterious woman who would walk by you and give you a smirk. I definitely like this!

Lady Death Collection: Savage

$26.00 per 5ml bottle. Presented in an amber apothecary glass vial.

BPAL’s Description: Lady Death in all her savage glory: an unrelenting supernatural warrior witch!

White musk, grey amber, Calabrian bergamot, vanilla absolute, French labdanum, styrax, wormwood, caraway, and bois de jasmin.

My Thoughts: Another musk category scent. It almost smells chocolatey at first which must be the blend of the vanilla and grey amber together as the top notes. It dries down to a little more floral which is the bois de jasmin coming through along with maybe the French labdanum and a bit of the caraway. I’m unsure of what styrax, French Labdanum, and wormwood smells like, so I can’t say if I smell them or not.  It leaves a very feminine scent that lingers gently on the nose. I also really like this one. It’s definitely flirty.  Whoever this woman (this scent) is, I want to be her.

Dawn Collection: Priestess

$26.00 per 5ml bottle. Presented in an amber apothecary glass vial.

BPAL’s Description: Damascus rose, jasmine, myrrh, opoponax, white sage, and patchouli.

My Thoughts: This one is in the floral category. The very first thing you smell is the damascus rose as the top note, then it fades into jasmine and the myrrh.  As it dries down, the white sage and patchouli come center stage. It is definitely an earthly grounded scent, reminiscent of walking through a priestess’ garden. It’s as if you’re following her through her rose garden and getting wafts of her scent as she walks by.  Again, I really like this one and I can see myself wearing this on a visit to a gorgeous rose garden or romantic picnic. It’s definitely reminds me of spring or summer.

Hellboy Collection: Abe Sapien

$26.00 per 5ml bottle. Presented in an amber apothecary glass vial.

BPAL’s Description: A soft aquatic musk with kelp and juniper.

My Thoughts: This is in the musk category.  I smell both the kelp and juniper in the top notes. As it dries down, the juniper is at the forefront and lets the kelp linger softly after you pull away. It has a really nice clean and soapy smell on the dry down.  I think this scent is more masculine. This would definitely be a really nice scent to get a guy friend, boyfriend, husband, dad, male relative, etc. It smells really good.

Hellboy Collection: Liz

$26.00 per 5ml bottle. Presented in an amber apothecary glass vial.

BPAL’s Description: A light, feminine vanilla floral perfume and a swirl of smoke and leather.

My Thoughts: This is in the musk category. Right away I smell the swirl of smoke and leather as the top note. Which is really interesting to smell. Liz has definitely been hanging around Hellboy while he’s smoking a stogie/cigar. It slowly turns into that vanilla floral on the dry down and now it’s like Liz hasn’t seen Hellboy in maybe 30 minutes and you can finally smell what she’s actually wearing. I love how this one told a story as you smelled it which is so cool! To me it’s definitely a character scent, maybe one I’d wear in a more rugged female costumed character.  Like a gun fighter. This is a female gun fighter cosplay fragrance.  This is the fragrance Kara Thrace/Starbuck would wear.  It’s pretty bad ass.

Grendel Collection: Cyborg

$26.00 per 5ml bottle. Presented in an amber apothecary glass vial.

BPAL’s Description: Inspired by the character GRENDEL-PRIME. A heavy-metal cyborg, created by the Grendel-Khan to act as a paladin protector for his only son and heir, an unstoppable killing machine.

Gleaming metal and black leather over a khus-darkened bay rum.

My Thoughts: This is in the musk category.  I smell the khus-darkened bay rum right away as the top note.  And then he put on his black leather jacket on the dry down with a hint of spice. This is a sexy and masculine scent and I love it! Definitely one for the guy friend, boyfriend, husband. I would snuggle with this man. Such a great scent!
